We believe in God the Father, Jesus Christ the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We affirm God’s divine plan for salvation, acknowledging that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:10, 3:23), and that God demonstrated His love for humanity through the redemptive sacrifice of Jesus Christ (Romans 5:8).
This Church adopts the Holy Bible, King James Version, as the authoritative rule for our faith, practice, and methods of operation. We believe in and uphold the doctrinal teachings of Holy Scripture as outlined in Matthew 28:19–20; Acts 2:42; Acts 5:4; and II Timothy 2:15. Our purpose is to worship and serve God faithfully and to fulfill the Great Commission of Jesus Christ, as instructed in Matthew 28:19–20; I Timothy 5:20; II Timothy 4:2; and Titus 2:15.
We promote and encourage lives rooted in faith and prayer, trusting God in all things (Matthew 21:22; Luke 18:1; I Thessalonians 5:17). We are committed to spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ, seeking the lost and proclaiming salvation to those who do not yet know Him (Psalm 126:4–5; Proverbs 11:30; Matthew 4:15; Luke 14:23; John 20:21; I Corinthians 1:18–21; Luke 6:38; I Corinthians 16:2).
We believe in the birth of Jesus Christ, His earthly ministry, His death, burial, and resurrection. As believers, we joyfully await His return, as recorded in Revelation 1:7:
“Behold, He cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see Him, and they also which pierced Him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of Him. Even so, Amen."
Our Mission Statement
Bringing People Into A Saving Relationship with God
In 1960, in faithful obedience to the call of God upon his life, Reverend William Henry Craig, Sr. answered the call to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He became the pastor of Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, located at Humboldt and Ash on Detroit’s west side. The original congregation consisted of a small but dedicated group of founding members, including Deacon Hall, Deacon Wynn, Deacon Barnes, and Deacon John Cummings, who also served as a Trustee. First Lady Johnnie Belle Craig faithfully served as the church pianist.
Under the leadership of Pastor Craig, the church flourished. Several years later, following a church split, Mrs. Robbie Sims proposed the name New Mark Missionary Baptist Church, which was located at 16th and Ash. New Mark Missionary Baptist Church continued to grow as many families joined the congregation.
Through seasons of challenge and prosperity, obstacles and abundance, Pastor William Henry Craig, Sr. remained steadfast in preaching the Word of God. He faithfully taught all who came into his presence—from seniors to children—and consistently extended a helping hand to those in need. In recognition of his outstanding leadership, genuine love for people, engaging personality, and straightforward approach to ministry, Mrs. Mary Starks suggested that the church be renamed in honor of Pastor Craig. With the full agreement of the congregation, the church became known as Craig’s Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.
Among the founding members of Craig’s Chapel Missionary Baptist Church were Deacon Charles Sims, Deacon John Cummings, Mother Hattie Belle Cummings, Sister Mary Starks, Sister Robbie Sims, Sister L. J. Henry, Sister Betty Jo Henry, Ms. Eula Parham, and Sister Jean Parham. As the ministry continued to grow, it became necessary to relocate. Pastor William H. Craig, Sr. purchased the church building located at 4800 Buchanan Street at 31st Street.
Pastor William H. Craig, Sr. faithfully served as pastor until 1998, when he transitioned into Pastor Emeritus status. By his appointment, Reverend Donald D. Craig, Sr. was named Pastor-Elect. As God ordained, on February 8, 2025, the legacy of Pastor William H. Craig, Sr. continues through the leadership of Reverend Donald D. Craig, Sr., pastor of what is now known as Chapel Christian Ministries.
Together with his wife, First Lady Carol Craig, Pastor Donald D. Craig, Sr. is committed to continuing the legacy of Pastor William H. Craig, Sr. and honoring the founding members who laid the foundation of this ministry—faithfully carrying out the mission of “bringing people into a saving relationship with God.”
Under the leadership of the Holy Spirit and through the unity and cooperation of our current members, Chapel Christian Ministries will continue to move forward by faith.
As instructed in Matthew 28:19–20 (KJV):
“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
